MCE pledges to revamp and improve the state of Duasidan Monkey Sanctuary

The Dormaa Central Municipal Chief Executive, Honorable Dominic Adoma Ameyaw, has disclosed that significant progress has been made in plans to revitalize and enhance the Duasidan Monkey Sanctuary located in Duasidan, a community within the Dormaa Central Municipality.

In an interview with Kwaku Mensah Abrampa, following a working visit to the site alongside the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Chief Executive emphasized that the Duasidan Monkey Sanctuary is a notable tourist attraction in the Bono region, specifically within Dormaa Central, which requires urgent attention for renovations. Such improvements aim to elevate its status and attract more tourists, thereby generating revenue to facilitate the development of the Duasidan community and Dormaa Central at large.

He mentioned that the Assembly is in advanced stages of planning to collaborate with private entities to develop the site, including the construction of recreational facilities such as a restaurant, guest house, pool and others in close proximity to the sanctuary. This initiative aims to enhance its appeal to visitors from distant locations who wish to observe the monkeys.

Furthermore, the Municipal Assembly is contemplating organizing the Independence Day celebrations in the coming year or within the next two years at Duasidan. This event is intended to raise awareness of the monkey sanctuary with plans to construct a health center to provide healthcare services to both tourists and the local community. The Chief Executive emphasized his intention to engage with the Ministry of Tourism to explore how best to secure support from private entities for the expansion and rejuvenation of the Duasidan Monkey Sanctuary, thereby elevating it to a desirable tourism destination.

The Assembly Member for the Duasidan Electoral Area, Honorable Jacob Awisi Obiri, also known as Ahendua, revealed that he has put in relentless efforts in collaboration with the Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly to facilitate development and progress at the Monkey Sanctuary in Duasidan. However, he has not achieved the level of success he anticipated. Consequently, he is appealing for governmental support to enhance the attractiveness of the sanctuary for visitors.

He expressed concern regarding the poor condition of the road connecting Dormaa Ahenkro and Duasidan, which discourages individuals from traveling such roads solely to observe monkeys at Duasidan. Therefore, he urges the Municipal Chief Executive and the government to work together to ensure the construction of the Duasidan road, thereby making travel more convenient and appealing for all tourists and visitors who come to the community for tourism and other purposes.

He emphasized the urgent need to revitalize the environment to make it more inviting for visitors.

Mr. Kwabena Kyeremeh, also known as Agya Bob, who serves as a caretaker at the Sanctuary expressed the challenges faced by the caretakers. He noted that their facilities are inadequate for welcoming visitors, among other issues, and they are thus seeking support. He further disclosed that a non-governmental organization has constructed a small office for them; however, the disconnection of electricity has made it challenging for them to work efficiently in that office, hence he is urging the relevant authorities to heed their request for assistance in order to enable them to serve the community effectively.
