Martin Akpebu, a private legal practitioner and human rights activist, has criticized Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government for their economic mismanagement, reckless borrowing, and spending of the country’s resources. In an interview on Joy FM in Accra, Akpebu accused the government of ignoring warnings from the World Bank about the risk of bankruptcy and refusing to participate in a debt suspension program that could have salvaged the country from the impending crisis.
According to Akpebu, the government’s inaction has plunged the country into a severe economic crisis, causing untold hardships for its citizens. He also criticized the government for continuing to make decisions that aggravate the plight of Ghanaians. Akpebu believes that President Akufo-Addo and members of his government will be punished for their insensitivity towards the plight of Ghanaians.
Akpebu made these comments in response to the failure of the government to pay the yields of individual bondholders as promised. The Coalition of Individual Bondholders demanded the payment of yields due to its members within 48 hours, but the government failed to resume payments on the promised date. In a statement, the Ministry of Finance later announced that it would pay the matured coupons and principals within 48 hours but did not specify a date for subsequent payments.
Akpebu criticized the government for disregarding the payment plan and worsening the hardships faced by bondholders through its mismanagement of the country’s affairs.
