Lionel Messi, the Argentine and Paris St-Germain forward, has once again been crowned the men’s player of the year at the 2022 Best FIFA Awards held in Paris. The 35-year-old football superstar outshone his competitors, French forwards Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema, to clinch the prestigious title for the second time in his career, having previously won the award in 2019.
Messi’s remarkable performance during the 2021-22 season played a significant role in his win. He captained Argentina to their third World Cup title in Qatar and scored 27 goals in 49 games for club and country, earning him the coveted award. During his acceptance speech, Messi expressed his gratitude towards his teammates, acknowledging their immense contribution towards his triumph.
The awards ceremony also recognized other top performers in the sport. Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was named the women’s player of the year, while Lionel Scaloni, who led Argentina to their third World Cup title, was crowned men’s coach of the year. Despite the competition from Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, Scaloni won the title, having played an instrumental role in leading Argentina to their World Cup victory.
The Best FIFA Awards, held annually, celebrate and acknowledge the outstanding performance of players, coaches, and teams in international football. It remains a highly anticipated event in the football calendar, showcasing the best of football from around the world.
