The Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA) has suspended its strike action, according to a letter obtained by 3news. The letter, dated May 4, was signed by KODA Chairman Dr. Asare Offei and addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
“The Korle Bu Doctors Association (KODA) is formally notifying management and the public of the suspension of the strike action commenced this morning, Monday, May 4, 2026,” the letter stated.
Dr. Offei explained that the decision followed a meeting with hospital management, where assurances were given to ensure that Laboratory Physicians return to their posts. He emphasized the importance of peaceful collaboration between Laboratory Physicians and Medical Laboratory Scientists at the Central Laboratory for quality healthcare delivery. KODA members have been urged to resume work and outpatient services from May 5.
The strike, which began after KODA petitioned management on April 30, was in response to the alleged unlawful exclusion of Laboratory Physicians from the Central Laboratory. KODA demanded the immediate reinstatement of affected physicians and an investigation into threats made against members.
KODA highlighted that Laboratory Physicians—including pathologists, haematologists, and microbiologists—have historically been central to Ghana’s medical system. The association criticized members of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists for blocking physicians from the lab and noted reports of threats against some members.
Calling the situation “entirely unacceptable,” KODA stressed that clinical laboratories should be led by qualified Laboratory Physicians, citing their expertise in interpreting complex test results in line with international best practices.
