The Head of Public Affairs for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has confirmed that seven invigilators were arrested on the first day of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Speaking to 3news on May 4, Mr. Kapi revealed that the arrests occurred across three regions: Central (3), Bono (2), and Ashanti (2). Five of the cases involved mobile phone infractions, while two involved invigilators preparing answers to distribute to candidates. Of the seven, four were actively invigilating during the exams.

Mr. Kapi expressed disappointment over teachers’ involvement in examination malpractice despite repeated warnings and stakeholder engagements. “It is baffling. WAEC and the Ministry of Education have made several appeals, and the Director General has been clear about the consequences. Yet some teachers still engage in such practices,” he said.

Despite these incidents and minor challenges with the distribution of exam materials, Mr. Kapi noted that the exams began smoothly. “No candidate was denied the opportunity to write the exam. The main issue was the late arrival of some examination materials in parts of the Western Region. We expect to resolve this in the coming days,” he assured.
