Nurses and midwives at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have threatened to join a strike unless the Health Minister reverses the suspension of the hospital’s CEO by 8:00 am on Sunday, June 7, 2026.

In a letter dated June 6, the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), KATH Branch, expressed solidarity with the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) and other health workers already on industrial action. The association described the CEO’s two-week suspension as “unnecessary” and said it fails to address KATH’s pressing challenges, including infrastructure deficits, overcrowding, inadequate logistics, and resource constraints.

The GRNMA warned that patient safety and quality care cannot be ensured while the CEO remains suspended. They highlighted the hospital’s overwhelming patient numbers, which far exceed its current capacity and resources.

The association issued three demands:

1. The Ministry of Health must fast-track the operationalisation of health facilities to decongest KATH.

2. Urgent infrastructural expansion, retooling, and resource allocation are needed to bring the hospital to international standards.

3. The CEO’s suspension must be immediately lifted to safeguard patients and staff, especially in the emergency department.

“We wish to state categorically that, effective 8:00 am June 7, 2026, nurses and midwives at KATH will join the strike if the Health Minister does not reverse the directive,” the letter warned.

The letter was signed by GRNMA KATH Branch Chairperson Josephine Boatemaa Asmah and Secretary Abraham Adu.
