The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that the government is yet to formally adopt the revised curriculum for Kindergarten to Primary Six developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).
According to the Minister, the proposed curriculum is currently under review by the Ghana Education Service (GES) after it was submitted to the Ministry of Education by NaCCA last month.
Speaking at the 73rd anniversary celebration of Great Apam Senior High School in the Central Region, Mr Iddrisu explained that the GES review would be followed by consideration by Cabinet before the curriculum could be approved and implemented.
He said after the GES completes its assessment, the proposal would be presented to Cabinet for approval, after which the Ministry would collaborate with relevant institutions, including the GES and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, to roll out the new curriculum.
“We are repositioning the curriculum for learners from KG to Primary Six, with emphasis on moral values. Classroom learning alone is not enough. Problem-solving, critical thinking, analytical skills and character building will be central to the curriculum,” he said.
The proposed curriculum is expected to introduce emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), electronics and digital learning at the basic education level.
Mr Iddrisu said the initiative forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda aimed at preparing young learners for the future.
Meanwhile, the Education Minister announced plans to upgrade Great Apam Senior High School from Category B to Category A as part of efforts to improve access to quality secondary education.
He also assured the school of government support to complete abandoned GETFund projects, provide additional infrastructure and improve teaching and learning conditions.
Additionally, Mr Iddrisu announced plans to provide Great Apam Senior High School with a bus to help address the institution’s transportation challenges.
