Government to Equip Public Institutions with Solar Power Systems
In a significant move announced during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA), the government revealed plans to equip public institutions across the country with solar power systems. The initiative aims to reduce electricity consumption, cut operational costs, and promote sustainable energy use in schools, hospitals, and other public facilities.

According to the President, this program is part of the broader strategy to transition Ghana towards renewable energy sources and enhance energy efficiency in the public sector. By harnessing solar power, public institutions will not only reduce their dependence on the national grid but also contribute to the country’s environmental sustainability goals.
“This initiative will help public institutions save on electricity bills while supporting our commitment to a greener, more sustainable future,” the President stated during the address.
The rollout of the solar systems will begin this year, targeting key public facilities in regions most affected by high energy costs. The government is also engaging local companies to provide the solar installations, creating jobs and boosting the renewable energy sector.
With this initiative, Ghana takes another step toward modernizing public infrastructure while promoting the use of clean and renewable energy.
