GNFS RESPONDS TO MULTIPLE ROAD TRAFFIC CRASHES IN VOLTA REGION; 6 DEAD, 34 RESCUED
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) on Sunday, June 21, 2026, mounted swift emergency responses to multiple road traffic accidents across the Volta Region, rescuing 34 victims while six (6) persons lost their lives.
The first set of incidents occurred along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the PekiβKpeve Road, where rescue crews from the Peki Fire Station responded to two (2) simultaneous crashes after receiving a distress call at 1253hrs. STNO II Richard Amenyogbeli, led the crew and arrived at the scene at 1303hrs and immediately deployed resources to both accident locations.
One of the crashes involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck (GT 9993-18), travelling from Tema to Tamale, and a Toyota Camry (GE 735-14), travelling from Nkwanta to Accra. All five (5) occupants of the vehicles made up of [four (4) males and one (1) female] had been rescued before the arrival of the rescue crew. Both vehicles sustained partial damage.
The second crash involved a Metro Mass Transit bus (AS 4984-09), travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board. The rescue crew successfully extricated and rescued 24 victims, comprising seven (7) males and seventeen (17) females, who were conveyed to the Peki Government Hospital for medical attention. Four (4) persons, including one (1) male and three (3) females, unfortunately passed on at the scene. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to the Police for preservation and further investigation.
In a separate incident at the Ho Civic Centre, rescuers from the Ho Regional Headquarters responded to another road traffic crash after receiving a distress call at 1304hrs. Under the command of ADO II Seth Sarfo, the crew arrived at the scene within two (2) minutes and immediately commenced rescue operations.
The accident involved a Hyundai Mighty truck (GE 342-11), a Pragya tricycle (No. 26-VR 455), and an unregistered motorbike. A total of ten (10) victims were rescued and transported to the Ho Municipal Hospital and Ho Teaching Hospital for treatment. Follow-up at the hospitals later confirmed two (2) male fatalities among the injured.
The vehicles involved in the crashes sustained varying degrees of damage, while investigations are underway to determine their causes.
The Ghana National Fire Service urges motorists to strictly adhere to road safety regulations, avoid excessive speeding, exercise caution while driving, and ensure regular vehicle maintenance to help reduce preventable road traffic crashes.
