The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that the fire, which destroyed over 100 shops at Kantamanto Market in Accra, has been fully extinguished. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the aftermath of the incident.
According to a statement issued by the GNFS, an investigation is currently underway to determine the origin and cause of the blaze. The statement read: “The fire has been fully extinguished, with no reported injuries or fatalities. An investigation is currently underway to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Our sympathies go out to the affected traders.”
The fire, which broke out on Thursday, January 2, 2025, devastated a significant portion of the market, leaving hundreds of traders counting their losses. Efforts by the Ghana Fire Service to contain the blaze were hampered by the lack of fire hydrants in the market, which allowed the flames to spread to other sections.
The incident has raised concerns about the availability of fire safety measures in major markets across the country. Many affected traders have called on authorities to prioritize fire prevention systems to avoid future occurrences.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on providing support to the displaced traders and implementing measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
