Colonel Eric Aggrey-Quarshie, the Director of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, has stated that the military’s mission, when invited to a location, is to subdue those responsible for the situation that requires their intervention, not to show respect. He emphasized that people must avoid actions or inactions that lead to military involvement.
Colonel Aggrey-Quarshie noted, “You refused to respect the police so when I come in, the issue of respect does not come in anymore because we want to subdue whatever issues that are coming up. And most times getting people to lie down – unfortunately that is what happens – is a way of segregating hardcore troublesome people from innocent ones…when you call the military in, don’t expect normal procedures. So the best thing is not to do things that will bring the military there. Let’s respect.”
He went on to say that despite the excesses that occurred as a result of the military’s “invasion” of the Ashaiman area, many have commended the military for their actions. He claimed that there is a small group of individuals who, through media outlets, are attempting to portray the entire country as being opposed to the military’s actions, but that this is not the case.
Colonel Aggrey-Quarshie stated that he had received numerous calls and messages from people and institutions thanking the military for their actions in Ashaiman, with some even asking when they would be deployed again.
Earlier this month, the military entered the Ashaiman enclave and allegedly inflicted violence on residents following the killing of a soldier in the area. They reportedly arrested over 180 individuals and took them to their barracks for further investigation.
While the government and military officials have defended their actions, the incident has been widely condemned.
