The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a safety advisory to Ghanaians in South Africa, urging them to exercise increased caution ahead of planned protests related to immigration issues.

The advisory comes in response to reports and viral videos of xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in parts of the country. The protests are organized by a group called the March Organisation, which plans to march to the Presidency to voice their grievances.

In a statement released on Tuesday, April 28, the High Commission, represented by High Commissioner Benjamin Anani Quashie, emphasized the importance of personal safety. “I urge everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize your safety during this period,” the statement said.

The High Commission specifically advised Ghanaian shop owners in Pretoria to close their businesses for the day and avoid areas where protests are expected. “Shop owners are strongly encouraged to shut their businesses and stay clear of protest zones,” the statement noted.

Additionally, nationals were cautioned against participating in any public gatherings that could lead to conflict. “Please refrain from taking part in public events that could escalate into confrontation,” the advisory warned.

Ghanaians were also urged to maintain a low profile, both in public and online, and to avoid sharing any content that could be perceived as provocative or inflammatory.

The High Commission assured the public that it would provide further updates as the situation evolves.
