Former President of Ghana, Mr. Dramani Mahama, has been appointed to lead the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) to observe the upcoming general election in Nigeria. In a recent Facebook post, Mahama expressed his disappointment with the Ghanaian Electoral Commission’s (EC) inability to inspire confidence in its stakeholders. Mahama, who has never had a cordial relationship with the EC Chairperson, Jean Adukwei Mensa, compared the EC unfavorably to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria, which he noted had listened to concerns from all parties contesting the Nigerian election.
Mahama also noted that the EC’s hostility towards one political party was legendary and lamented the Commission’s refusal to host a meeting with the two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite the efforts of the National Peace Council. Mahama’s comments come ahead of Ghana’s own general election in 2024, which will be closely watched by the international community.
