Students and teachers at the Glorious K.K.M.A Cluster of Schools in Kakasunaka No. 1, near Michael Camp in the Kpone Katamanso Municipality, are facing serious threats due to the dilapidated state of the structures accommodating them.
The school, which appears to be the only public school in the suburb, was originally a private institution before being handed over to the government. Unfortunately, the buildings have been left without maintenance, turning them into potential death traps for both pupils and staff.
Visible defects in the classroom blocks include:
Leaking roofs
Broken beams
Cracked walls
Damaged wooden frames holding roofing sheets
Wet floors due to weak screeding
A visit to the school reveals the extent of the problem. Wastewater from a nearby deserted land seeps through the ground, further weakening the already fragile floors and structures. Inside the headmistress’s office, several cracks are visible on the walls, and unplastered surfaces continue to leave sand on the floor, creating an unsafe and unhygienic environment.
Headmistress Awura Ama-Ama Ntriwaa has appealed to the government and corporate organizations for urgent intervention, stressing that the weak nature of the buildings makes daily teaching and learning extremely hazardous.
Solomon Teye Mensah Addo, Executive Director of the Teye Foundation, who witnessed the school’s conditions, expressed disapproval at students being forced to learn in such unsanitary environments. He described it as “inhuman” and urged all stakeholders to come together to address the situation.
Teachers, who have been enduring these challenges for an extended period, shared that there are no basic social amenities in the school. They are often forced to go home whenever nature calls due to the absence of functional washrooms.
The dire conditions at Glorious K.K.M.A Cluster of Schools underscore an urgent need for renovation or complete reconstruction to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both pupils and teachers.
