Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has criticised Ghana’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), describing it as a measure that did not address the country’s economic challenges but rather delayed the underlying problems.
According to Dr. Forson, the programme, which was introduced as part of efforts to restructure Ghana’s debt and restore economic stability, was not a sustainable solution to the country’s financial difficulties.
He made the remarks while highlighting government’s approach to rebuilding confidence in the economy, stressing that the focus should be on implementing policies that tackle the root causes of economic challenges rather than temporary fixes.
Dr. Forson said the current administration is committed to restoring fiscal discipline, strengthening the economy, and ensuring that future debt management strategies provide lasting solutions for Ghanaians.
The DDEP, introduced under the previous administration, involved the restructuring of domestic bonds held by investors as part of Ghana’s IMF-supported economic recovery programme. The initiative sparked concerns among bondholders and other stakeholders over its impact on investments and livelihoods.
