The Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, Michael Harry Yamson, has proposed a constitutional reform that will allow Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to retain a larger share of revenue generated within their jurisdictions.
Mr Yamson believes local authorities must have greater financial independence to effectively address development needs in their communities.
He is proposing that MMDAs should be allowed to keep at least 75 percent of their internally generated funds, arguing that this will strengthen local governance and reduce overdependence on central government support.
According to him, giving assemblies more control over their resources will enable them to respond quickly to local challenges and improve service delivery.
The proposal forms part of broader discussions on improving Ghana’s decentralisation system and empowering local authorities.
