(DOVVSU) in Accra has remanded 33-year-old Latifa Salifu over the alleged theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital.

Latifa was remanded on Friday, February 20, after appearing before the court, following swift police investigations and public assistance that led to her arrest. The incident was initially reported on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
She is expected to reappear in court on March 4, 2026, as investigations continue.

According to police, at about 10 a.m. on February 17, Abigail Dzikunu, accompanied by Henrita Abe Blessed, reported that an unidentified woman posing as a nurse had taken a newborn from the hospital’s postnatal ward.
The baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who delivered her son on February 14, told investigators that a woman dressed in a peach-coloured nurse’s uniform took the child under the pretext of administering medication and failed to return.

The suspect allegedly claimed she had delivered at the facility but was discharged due to inadequate care. However, police say checks at the hospital found no records to support her claim.
The incident has renewed public concern over security at healthcare facilities, particularly maternity wards, with calls for stricter visitor screening and enhanced surveillance systems to prevent similar cases.
