Private Legal Practitioner and lecturer at GIMPA School of Law, Dr. Kwaku Anane-Gyinde, has expressed his approval of the newly established constitutional review committee initiated by President John Mahama. This committee aims to address the concerns of Ghanaians regarding the 1992 constitution for potential amendments.
In an interview on GIFTs FM Morning Show, Anopa Bosuo, Dr. Anane-Gyinde remarked that the constitution, which has served the nation for over 32 years, is overdue for revision to bolster the country’s democracy and good governance. He emphasized that Ghana has progressed through various stages, making it imperative to amend the constitution to align with the nation’s current conditions.
He highlighted Article 71, along with other sections of the constitution, for consideration and potential amendment. He supported an argument for the election of MMDCEs, advocated for capping the number of Ministers a president can nominate, and suggested halting the appointment of MPs as Ministers.
Dr. Kwaku Anane-Gyinde underscored that, considering the constitutional review committee established by the late President John Atta Mills, it will be less challenging for the committee formed under President Mahama to fulfill their mandate promptly, thereby facilitating an expedited process for the amendment. He emphasized that although there have been two constitutional review committees instituted during the Atta Mills and Akufo Addo administrations which did not come to fruition, he believes President Mahama will implement the reports of the newly established committee and ensure the constitutional amendment, as it was part of his campaign promises prior to the 2024 election.
