CAF Approves Accra Sports Stadium for Ghana vs. Sudan AFCON Qualifier
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the Accra Sports Stadium to host the upcoming AFCON 2024 qualifier between Ghana and Sudan. This announcement comes after CAF imposed a temporary ban on the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The qualifier, set to take place on October 11, 2024, is crucial for both teams as they aim to secure their place in the next AFCON tournament. Ghana’s Black Stars will now have to make adjustments to play in the capital city, with the Accra Sports Stadium set to accommodate fans eager to support the national team.
CAF’s decision to switch venues follows a recent inspection and comments made about the pitch at the Baba Yara Stadium, where the governing body highlighted certain infrastructural and logistical shortcomings. As a result, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had to quickly arrange an alternative, leading to the choice of the Accra Sports Stadium, which meets CAF’s requirements partially after some renovations made and checks by CAF inspectors
Fans and officials are hopeful that the change in venue will not disrupt the team’s performance. The Black Stars are expected to enjoy strong support in Accra, where they have historically performed well. With the stakes high, the team will be looking to secure a positive result against Sudan to strengthen their position in the qualifiers.
