The Cabinet is set to meet today, Thursday, May 14, to consider recommendations submitted by the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). The special session will be chaired by President John Dramani Mahama.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said a draft position paper has been prepared following extensive consultations and legal reviews by the Attorney-General and the President’s legal team. This paper is intended to guide the government’s official response to the constitutional review proposals.
Speaking on Joy News, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that President Mahama had earlier instructed that the committee’s report be thoroughly examined to inform the government’s stance on the proposed reforms to the 1992 Constitution. He noted that this review process is now complete, paving the way for Cabinet deliberations.
“So Thursday, 14th May, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” he said.
The meeting will enable Cabinet to determine the government’s final position on the various recommendations from the constitutional review exercise. Mr. Kwakye Ofosu clarified that, unlike a commission of inquiry which requires a white paper, the constitutional review process only requires a position paper outlining the government’s stance.
Once approved by Cabinet, the position paper will be made public, allowing citizens to understand the government’s view on the proposed reforms. Following this, implementation measures will be considered, including the possible establishment of an implementation committee.
He also emphasized that the recommendations will not be treated uniformly—some proposals may be fully accepted, others modified, and some rejected based on practicality and feasibility.
Although the session will primarily focus on the constitutional review report, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu indicated that other government matters may also be discussed. He reassured that public engagement on the proposals will continue after Cabinet concludes its deliberations.
