A tragic incident has thrown residents of Kasoa 94 in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region into mourning after a nine-year-old schoolboy, Mohammed Abdul Kadir, lost his life after reportedly falling into a dangerous and deteriorated bridge in the community.
The heartbreaking incident has reignited concerns among residents about the poor condition of infrastructure in the area, particularly the bridge which they describe as a “death trap.”
According to eyewitnesses and residents, the young boy was attempting to cross the bridge when he accidentally fell into the deep drain beneath it.
Efforts by nearby residents to rescue him proved unsuccessful, and he was later pronounced dead.
The incident has left the community devastated, with many residents expressing anger over what they describe as years of neglect by authorities despite several complaints about the dangerous state of the bridge.
Residents say the bridge serves as a major access route for schoolchildren, traders, and commuters, yet its weak and damaged structure continues to pose a serious risk to lives.
They claim repeated appeals to the Municipal Assembly for repairs have yielded little results.
Speaking to the media, some residents blamed the Municipal Assembly for failing to prioritize the safety of residents, especially children who use the bridge daily.
They accused the Assembly of abandoning critical development projects and called on the Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, to take immediate action.
The grieving residents are therefore appealing to government, the Municipal Assembly, and other relevant authorities to urgently reconstruct the bridge and implement safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
They warned that unless swift intervention is undertaken, more lives could be lost through the hazardous structure.
