As the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) continues across the Western Region, some examination halls in Sekondi-Takoradi are seeing more empty desks than expected. Out of 6,209 candidates registered in the metropolis, 45 students—27 boys and 18 girls—have been absent since the start of the exams.

Investigations suggest a mix of reasons for the absences. Some students have relocated with their families, while others traveled out of the area after registration. One female candidate was unable to sit the exams due to pregnancy, and in several cases, the reasons for absence remain unclear.

The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Nelson, conducted a monitoring tour of several exam centers to interact with candidates and oversee the conduct of the exercise. Addressing the students, he highlighted the importance of dedication and integrity.

“Your hard work over the last three years is what will carry you through. Avoid shortcuts and focus on what you have learned. We expect not only excellence in your grades but also in your character as you progress to the next level of your education,” he advised.

The majority of the region’s 45,116 candidates continue their exams in a calm and orderly environment, reflecting their commitment to shaping their futures.
