A 27-year-old man, Kwadwo Richmond, is currently on the run after allegedly killing his friend over a mere GH¢20 in Asuboa, Asante Akim South Municipality, Ashanti Region.
The victim, identified as Eric, had traveled from Dampong to Asuboa to collect an outstanding balance after selling a refrigerator to Richmond’s mother. Residents say Eric had promised to give Richmond GH¢20 upon his return, but reportedly had no money with him when he arrived.
Eyewitnesses report that Richmond demanded immediate payment, leading to a heated argument. During the dispute, Richmond allegedly attacked Eric with a cutlass. Eric, attempting to defend himself, grabbed a piece of wood, but it was no match for the cutlass.
Eric sustained a deep cut to his hand and, in a bid to escape, ran but collapsed by the roadside. He was rushed to Juaso Government Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival due to excessive blood loss.
Kwabena Ofori Atta, an eyewitness, said Eric leaves behind a wife and four children. “The family is now left stranded. It is heartbreaking that something like this happened over just twenty cedis,” he lamented.
Following the incident, Richmond has gone into hiding. Police have launched a manhunt and visited his residence as part of ongoing investigations.
The tragedy has left the Asuboa community in shock, raising concerns over rising violence and the devastating consequences of unresolved disputes.
