The Bank of Ghana has released a statement addressing rumors circulating on social media about the introduction of a GH¢500 coin as legal tender. According to reports, samples of the coin have already been released, but the Director for Currency Management at the Bank of Ghana, Dominic Owusu, has dismissed the rumors as false.
Mr. Owusu clarified that the Bank of Ghana has no plans to introduce a GH¢500 coin, and urged Ghanaians to disregard the misinformation. He emphasized that any currency issuance or change would be communicated to the public through an appropriate press release.
Furthermore, Mr. Owusu addressed reports that the one pesewa coin is no longer legal tender. He confirmed that the central bank has not demonetized the coin and emphasized the importance of handling cedi notes with care to prevent them from wearing out quickly.
“We want people to learn how to handle the cedi and prevent it from getting worn out easily. The Bank of Ghana is committed to saving the cedi, and we urge everyone to join us in this effort,” Mr. Owusu said.
In light of this, the Bank of Ghana has urged the public to be vigilant and verify any information they come across on social media before accepting it as true.
