The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, remains the leading candidate in the party’s 2028 presidential race, although his lead has narrowed, according to a new poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics.

The survey indicates that Mr Asiedu Nketia currently has the support of 27% of NDC delegates, a slight drop from the 29% recorded in the April 2026 poll.

His closest contender, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has gained momentum, increasing his support from 19% to 22% in the latest survey.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, recorded a decline in support, falling from 11% in April to 6% in July 2026.

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s support also reduced slightly from 8% to 7%, while former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah dropped from 8% to 5%.

Other potential contenders, including Professor Joshua Alabi and Eric Opoku, recorded 1% each, while 30% of delegates remain undecided, up from 24% in the previous poll.

The survey also assessed whether delegates support calls for Mr Asiedu Nketia to continue serving as National Chairman of the party. The results showed that 61% agreed he should remain in the position, while 26% disagreed and 13% had no opinion.

The poll further revealed growing support for Dr Ato Forson to lead the NDC into the 2028 general election against the New Patriotic Party’s potential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to the findings, 58% of delegates backed the idea of Dr Forson, an economist, representing the NDC against Dr Bawumia, who is also an economist. About 23% disagreed, while 19% were undecided.

Interestingly, 25% of delegates who currently support Mr Asiedu Nketia also agreed that Dr Forson should lead the party in the next election.

In a direct contest between Mr Asiedu Nketia and Dr Ato Forson, the two candidates were statistically tied. Mr Asiedu Nketia polled 34%, while Dr Forson recorded 33%, with 33% of delegates undecided. In the previous poll, Mr Asiedu Nketia led 37% to 32%.

Against other possible contenders, Mr Asiedu Nketia maintained a stronger advantage.

In a head-to-head matchup with Haruna Iddrisu, Mr Asiedu Nketia secured 45% support compared to Mr Iddrisu’s 16%, with 39% undecided.

Against Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr Asiedu Nketia led with 46%, while she recorded 15%, with 39% of delegates undecided.

He also led Julius Debrah by 45% to 16%, with 39% remaining undecided.

The regional analysis showed Dr Ato Forson performing strongly in some key electoral areas. In the swing regions of Greater Accra, Central, and Western, Dr Forson led with 29%, followed by Mr Asiedu Nketia with 23%.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang recorded 8%, Julius Debrah 5%, and Haruna Iddrisu 4%, while 27% of delegates remained undecided.

In the Akan regions, comprising Ashanti, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Eastern, Western, and Western North, Mr Asiedu Nketia led with 27%, narrowly ahead of Dr Forson with 25%.

The findings suggest that while Johnson Asiedu Nketia remains ahead in the early stages of the NDC’s 2028 flagbearer race, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson is steadily gaining support and emerging as a major contender.
