President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated the statement by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that Ghana’s economy was performing well prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
During his State of the Nation address on March 8, 2023, the President expressed concern over some people’s attempt to politicize the country’s economic performance before the pandemic. He highlighted that the Managing Director of the IMF had recognized the same in her recent statement.
The President also defended the government’s use of funds allocated to fight Covid-19, stating that they were appropriately utilized for that purpose. He emphasized that the government did not misuse the funds and urged the public not to lose confidence in the government’s ability to manage the crisis.
Additionally, he highlighted some measures that the government implemented to support Ghanaians during the pandemic, including tax relief for frontline health workers and subsidized electricity and water tariffs.
