The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully concluded a search and rescue operation following the collapse of a two-storey apartment building at Adenta Newsite during Thursday evening’s heavy rains.
The Service received a distress call at 6:36 p.m., prompting the immediate deployment of rescue teams from its National Headquarters, with support from personnel from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations. The building, located near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket, had five occupants trapped under the rubble.
The trapped individuals were identified as Margaret Kpeli, Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda. After a coordinated rescue effort, four of the occupants — Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda — were pulled out alive and transported to the 37 Military Hospital with various injuries. A dog trapped in the debris was also rescued.
Margaret Kpeli was recovered in an unconscious state and handed over to the Adenta District Police for preservation and further investigations.
The operation officially concluded at 10:54 p.m.
In a statement, GNFS commended residents who assisted in the initial rescue before emergency teams arrived. The Service also thanked personnel from the Ghana Police Service, medical teams, and fire officers from the National Headquarters, Legon, and Abelemkpe stations, along with other supporting agencies, for their collaborative efforts in the rescue operation.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, with authorities expected to carry out further investigations.
