The National Identification Authority (NIA) Executive Secretary, Prof Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, has given reasons for the delay in printing Ghana Cards. According to him, the NIA was facing financial difficulties, which made it impossible to print the cards. Despite having cards and capable staff, a private company was owed a significant amount of money, leading to their refusal to release the Ghana Cards to the NIA. The situation has led to 2.5 million unprinted cards, with 541,521 yet to be printed as of February 19th.
However, Prof Attafuah has assured Ghanaians that the outstanding cards will be printed within six months. He stated that the government had cleared some of the debts, and the NIA is hopeful that the cards will be released soon. He further assured that the 541,521 cards would be printed in less than two weeks when released.
Meanwhile, Dr John Osae-Kwapong, a Political Scientist and Fellow at the Centre for Democratic and Development (CDD-Ghana), has called for the NIA to be financially resourced to aid its work. He emphasized that the Ghana Card is an essential document and, when the NIA is financed, eligible voters’ registration for the Ghana Card would be smooth.
