Political Analyst Mr. Samuel Boateng has asserted that the current four-year presidential term should remain unchanged, contending that an extension to five years would be excessive.
In an interview on the GIFTS FM Morning Show, Mr. Boateng emphasized that governance resembles the process of constructing a house, whereby thorough planning is essential prior to the initiation of construction. He stated that serious political parties must be prepared to meet the expectations of governance within the designated four-year period, in contrast to less serious parties that may seek additional time.
He further indicated that the performance of the NPP and NDC administrations does not justify a five-year term for presidents; rather, he suggested that a two-year term would be more appropriate considering the poor governance they have provided us over the years.
He expressed concerns that extending the term to five years could result in significant hardship for the country if an unfit leader were elected, potentially leading to a decade of suffering before the restoration of freedom. This perspective underpins his opposition to the proposed five-year term for presidents, as he maintains that a four-year term allows sufficient time for a president to implement policies while ensuring democratic accountability.
He commended the Committee for their recommendation to prohibit Members of Parliament from being appointed as Ministers, Deputy Ministers, or Regional Ministers.
He emphasized that MPs are elected to represent their constituents in Parliament; however, due to the demands of ministerial appointments, they often have limited opportunities to engage with their constituents. Mr. Samuel Boateng asserted that the implementation of this recommendation would strengthen the separation of powers, allowing MPs to fulfill their legislative duties while Ministers carry out their responsibilities effectively, thereby contributing to growth and development.
