Johnson & Johnson has agreed to a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging that its talc-based products, including its baby powder, caused cancer.
The proposed agreement is expected to cover about 76,000 outstanding claims linked to allegations that the company’s talc products contributed to ovarian cancer and other illnesses.
The healthcare giant, however, maintains that its talc products are safe and denies claims that they caused cancer. The company says the settlement is intended to resolve years of litigation and allow it to focus on its healthcare business.
The legal battle over Johnson & Johnson’s talc products has continued for more than a decade, with cases producing different outcomes in courts. The company stopped selling its talc-based baby powder in the United States in 2020 and replaced it with a cornstarch-based version.
The settlement still requires approval from a large majority of eligible claimants before it can take effect.
