The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has apologised to President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, while appealing for presidential clemency following his conviction in an illegal mining-related case.
In his apology, Chairman Wontumi expressed regret over remarks he made during the 2024 election campaign, which he acknowledged may have offended the President and the First Lady.
His appeal comes after his conviction linked to illegal mining activities involving Akonta Mining, with supporters and some members of the NPP also calling on President Mahama to consider granting him clemency.
Meanwhile, discussions continue within political circles over the matter, with some NPP figures defending Chairman Wontumi and appealing for mercy, while others await the next steps from the appropriate authorities.
