The Northern Regional Special Operations Team (Red Maria) has arrested two suspects and recovered firearms, ammunition, and other items during an anti-armed robbery operation along the Tamale Yendi road. The operation was led by Chief Inspector Abu Issahaku on Wednesday, June 11, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., following a recent robbery incident in the area.
Police say the team was conducting a stop-and-search exercise when they spotted a grey Toyota Highlander with registration number AS 3110-21. The driver failed to comply with instructions to stop and instead sped off, prompting a pursuit. Another patrol team stationed ahead was alerted to intercept the vehicle, but the driver again refused to stop.
The vehicle was later found abandoned in a nearby village. A search of the car led to the recovery of one pump-action gun, one single-barrel gun, one foreign pistol, ten cartridges, five rounds of ammunition, one laptop computer, and three mobile phones. The occupants were, however, not found at the scene.
About thirty minutes later, four individuals three men and one woman arrived to retrieve the vehicle. Police mounted an ambush and arrested two of the men, while the other two escaped. Shortly after, a group of about 100 community members allegedly attacked the officers with sticks and stones in an attempt to free the suspects.
During the incident, two police officers were injured and two police vehicles were damaged. The officers fired warning shots to restore order and safely withdrew from the community. The suspects, identified as Andani Abdulai, 34, and Fuseini Seidu, 47, together with the seized exhibits, have been handed over to the Regional CID for further investigation.
