The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Upper West Branch, has organized a memorial lecture in honor of its former Second Vice Chairperson in Tumu, who served at the Tumu Municipal Hospital until his untimely death last year.

He left behind two children and a wife

The inaugural memorial lecture was held at Tumu College of Education in memory of the late nurse and unionist, Joseph Bapengne.

The lecture brought together health workers, colleagues, families, wife and children to celebrate his life and legacy.

Keynote speaker, Professor Callistus Tengan, described the lecture as not just a ceremony of remembrance, but a solemn gathering to celebrate a remarkable life.

Professor Tengan also praised Bapengne’s union work, recalling how he revived the dormant Sissala East GRNMA branch and defended the welfare of ordinary nurses.

The Upper West Regional Chairman of GRNMA, Lawrence Bangrwnin, described Bapengne as “a living library,”

Medical Superintendentof Sissala West District Hospital Dr. James Mwinsombo Sunkari, who worked with Bapengne at Tumu Municipal Hospital, also reflected on his clinical leadership and commitment to evidence-based practice.

The organizers also announced practical support for Bapengne’s children. GRNMA Upper West launched an investment fund of 50,000 Ghana cedis to support their education, with officials saying the support programme is ongoing and urging the public to continue contributing.
