Asante Akyem North MP Intercepted Over U.S. Arrest Warrant — Dafeamekpor
Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has disclosed that Asante Akyem North MP Kwame Ohene Frimpong was intercepted and questioned at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport over an arrest warrant issued by U.S. authorities.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, Dafeamekpor explained that the MP was informed the warrant is part of an international alert system, which allows enforcement action anywhere once circulated through global security channels such as Interpol.
“The Asante Akyem North MP was intercepted and interrogated for a few minutes and informed that there is a U.S. arrest warrant for him, which can be executed anywhere once issued through Interpol, regardless of whether it is known to your home country,” he said.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning while the MP was travelling to London on a private trip, using a diplomatic passport.
Dafeamekpor added that legal arrangements have been made for a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague to advise and represent the MP. “Since Monday, we have coordinated legal support. A Hague-based Ghanaian lawyer is advising him, and the team is awaiting full details and the basis for the U.S. warrant, as official documentation has not yet been fully disclosed,” he noted.
He urged the public to ignore unverified reports circulating on social media, emphasizing that the legal team is working strictly with verified information. Dafeamekpor confirmed that relevant documents have already been submitted to the lawyers in The Hague for review as part of ongoing legal coordination.
