The Ministry of Works and Housing has pledged to ramp up efforts against developers encroaching on wetlands and waterways, as part of renewed actions to address persistent flooding in Ghana. Sector Minister, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, stated that illegal land reclamation and construction on natural drainage paths continue to hinder government interventions, especially during the rainy season.
During an inspection of a wetland at Dansoman Otodjor in the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday, April 28, the Minister issued a firm warning to offenders, emphasizing that such practices will not be tolerated. He confirmed that authorities would take swift action to demolish unauthorized structures and impose penalties on those responsible.
“We are going after those building in the waterways. With the rains coming, we cannot allow their actions to cause flooding in Accra,” he said. “We will remove all these illegal structures and hold those behind them accountable.”
Minister Adjei also cautioned local assemblies against approving developments on wetlands. He warned that officials issuing such permits would be held accountable under the law.
“I urge local authorities to stop issuing unnecessary permits for buildings on waterways. Those responsible will face legal consequences,” he added.
The Minister emphasized the critical need for strict enforcement of planning regulations to protect natural drainage systems and reduce flood risks in vulnerable communities. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen flood prevention measures as the rainy season approaches.
