The government has successfully restored a fourth power generation unit at the Akosombo Dam, following disruptions caused by a recent fire outbreak. This milestone is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize Ghana’s electricity supply.

Energy and Green Transition Minister, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, announced the restoration in a Facebook post on April 28. The fourth unit was brought back online at 9:09 pm, just hours after the third unit was restored.

Minister Jinapor praised the technical teams for their dedication and expertise in recovering the lost power capacity. He called the restoration a major boost to the national power generation.

The fire at the Akosombo substation damaged the control room, resulting in a loss of over 1,000 megawatts of power, which contributed to power instability across the country. The phased recovery of the affected units is expected to improve generation output and enhance the reliability of the power system.

The government has assured the public that efforts to fully restore the facility and stabilize power supply are ongoing.
