Accra will become the centre of African armwrestling this week as the city hosts the 15th African Armwrestling Championship on 1 and 2 May at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

The prestigious continental event is expected to draw athletes, officials and delegates from across Africa, with 21 nations set to compete for honours in what promises to be a thrilling showcase of strength, technique and determination.

Several advance teams have already arrived in Ghana ahead of the competition, including delegations from Benin, Cameroon, Eswatini, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria and South Africa, underlining the scale and significance of the championship.

Ahead of the main competition, a congress of the continental governing body will be held, during which delegates are expected to re-elect Charles Osei Asibey as president. His anticipated return is seen as a vote of confidence in the leadership and rapid growth of the sport across the continent.

Hosting the championship further strengthens Ghana’s growing reputation as a destination for major sporting events, particularly following the development of world-class facilities such as the Borteyman Sports Complex. The tournament is also expected to boost local tourism, hospitality and business activity while inspiring a new generation of athletes in the country.

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation has expressed profound appreciation to its partners and supporters for making the event possible. They include the Ministry of Sports & Recreation, Ghana Olympic Committee, National Sports Authority, National Petroleum Authority, National Health Insurance Authority, Bethel Logistics, Verna Water, Kofikrom Pharmacy Limited, Stanbic Bank, Kofata Motors, Royal Dach Pharmacy, IMAH Hospital, Event Factory, Awards Center and the Ghana Tourism Authority.

With continental pride, national prestige and championship titles on the line, all eyes will be on Accra as Africa’s finest armwrestlers prepare to battle for glory.
