The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to step aside pending an investigation into a fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre.

This directive follows a major fire incident at the facility, which has caused significant disruptions in power transmission, leading to widespread outages across the country. The fire, which damaged critical control systems at the Akosombo installation, has been linked to ongoing electricity supply instability, with many regions experiencing prolonged power cuts.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage to key infrastructure. Minister Jinapor’s decision to ask the GRIDCo CEO to step aside aims to ensure an independent and transparent investigation into the incident.

In addition, there has been a shake-up in the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region, as part of efforts to improve operational efficiency and address the ongoing power distribution challenges.

These developments come amid growing public concern over the reliability of electricity supply. Businesses and households continue to face the consequences of the outages.

Minister Jinapor is expected to provide further updates during a press briefing scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Monday. The briefing will focus on the latest developments in electricity distribution, ongoing interventions, and steps being taken to stabilize the national grid.

The government has reassured the public of its commitment to restoring stable power supply and addressing the root causes of the disruptions.
