The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to managing migration in a safe, orderly, and efficient manner after receiving new operational equipment for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) at the 2026 First Quarter meeting of the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration (NCM) in Accra.
Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted that the equipment, funded by the European Union (EU) and donated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) under the ATTU project, will enhance the capacity of NADMO’s Emergency Operation Centres. The new tools will specifically help address internal displacement and reduce vulnerabilities faced by migrants, particularly in the Upper East and Upper West Regions.
Muntaka praised the NCM as “the most outstanding national platform” for coordinating migration efforts in Ghana. He commended the six Technical Working Groups under the NCM, which have made significant strides in improving border security, migration data management, establishing regular labour migration pathways, and facilitating the reintegration of returned migrants. These efforts are essential to achieving the 23 objectives outlined in the UN Global Compact for Migration.
“The establishment of the NCM underscores the government’s commitment to the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) and to building a comprehensive migration governance framework that covers both internal and international migration,” the Minister stated.
He expressed gratitude to development partners, particularly the EU and IOM, for their ongoing support and encouraged NCM members to continue collaborating for a productive year ahead. The new equipment is expected to enhance NADMO’s ability to quickly respond to displacement issues and safeguard vulnerable populations along Ghana’s northern migration corridors.
The EU Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Rune Skinnebach, emphasized that the donation is aimed at strengthening NADMO’s enforcement capacity and reinforcing the partnership between the Ministry of the Interior and the EU.
The Head of Mission for IOM, Madam Fatou Ndiaye, also praised the donation, calling it a valuable investment in Ghana’s emergency response system. She noted that IOM’s targeted training efforts have played a crucial role in building NADMO’s capacity to handle crises.
The donated items, totaling 100, included drones, televisions, computers, and laptops, all designed to enhance NADMO’s operational effectiveness.
