Traders in Kumasi have issued a stern ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate resumption of the delayed Kejetia Phase II redevelopment project by the end of May 2026, or they will take to the streets in protest.
The Combined Kumasi Central Market Traders Union, which represents those affected, has expressed growing frustration after years of hardship. In 2021, traders were evicted from the Kumasi Central Market to make room for the redevelopment, but progress on Phase II of the project has stalled, leaving traders without a proper marketplace.
At a press conference held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Union’s Director of Operations, Daniel Otuo Acheampong, highlighted how the ongoing delay has severely disrupted business activities and affected the livelihoods of many traders. The traders also voiced their dissatisfaction with Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s earlier assurance that work would resume in March 2026, a promise that has yet to be fulfilled.
The Union suspects that funding challenges may be behind the delay and is calling for the immediate release of the necessary funds to complete the project. Additionally, the traders have proposed that the project management be handed over to a more competent private entity to ensure better efficiency and security at the market.
They have also appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and help resolve the matter.
If the government fails to take action by the end of May, the Union has warned that they will have no choice but to stage a large-scale protest to demand their rights.
