The government has made significant strides towards the implementation of its Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) policy with the procurement of over 24,000 medical equipment, valued at more than GHC 500 million, to enhance healthcare delivery across the nation. The newly acquired equipment includes essential tools such as baby incubators, radiant warmers, oxygen concentrators, X-ray machines, patient monitors, infusion devices, laboratory analyzers, delivery beds, ultrasound machines, wheelchairs, and hospital beds.

During an inspection at the Central Medical Stores in Spintex, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accompanied by key officials, emphasized the importance of these tools in strengthening primary healthcare services, especially in underserved and rural areas where access to basic medical equipment has been limited.

“This investment is crucial for retooling public health facilities ahead of the policy’s rollout. These resources will ensure that our healthcare system is equipped to deliver quality, accessible, and affordable care to every Ghanaian,” stated the Minister. The equipment is expected to improve early disease detection, reduce complications, and preventable deaths, contributing to better health outcomes at the primary care level.

The distribution of the equipment will commence shortly, starting from the regions and progressing to the districts, prior to the official policy launch. The Ministry has also put measures in place for the proper maintenance of these tools to ensure their long-term functionality.

The FPHC policy, set to launch this month, aims to provide free essential medical services at CHPS compounds, health centers, and polyclinics. This initiative is a key part of the government’s strategy to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030, eliminating financial barriers and enhancing both preventive and curative care at the community level.
