Defence Ministry Clarifies that Crashed Aircraft in Tema Community 1 Was Privately Owned, Not Military
The Government of Ghana has issued a clarification regarding the fatal helicopter crash in Tema Community 1 on Monday, March 16, 2026, confirming that the aircraft involved was privately owned and not affiliated with the Ghana Armed Forces.
Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi took to Facebook to address growing misconceptions surrounding the incident. He dismissed claims that the helicopter was military-owned, stating, “We have received reports of a fatal crash involving a privately owned microlight aircraft at Tema Community 1 this afternoon. We wish to clarify that the aircraft is not owned by the Ghana Armed Forces. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the souls of the departed, and we extend our deepest condolences to their families.”
The incident occurred when the helicopter, with registration number G9-ADV, crash-landed at the TMA Daycare in Site 18, Tema Community 1, at approximately 14:59 hours. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was quick to respond, arriving at the scene within three minutes of receiving the distress call.
“The aircraft was badly mangled on impact, and emergency teams had to conduct extrication operations to retrieve the occupants,” said a statement from the GNFS.
Tragically, two men onboard the aircraft were confirmed dead at the scene. Their bodies were subsequently transferred to the Police for further investigation.
Emergency personnel from the Fire Service and Police, including regional commanders, coordinated efforts at the scene and initiated preliminary investigations into the cause of the crash. Authorities have assured the public that more details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
