Kasoa Boys Don’t Smoke, They Take ‘Ataya’ – Naa Koryoo

The Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has stirred conversation on social media after a comment she made about the youth in Kasoa during a television discussion.

Speaking on Good Afternoon Ghana on Metro TV Ghana, the MP said many young people in Kasoa are often wrongly portrayed as criminals or drug users.

According to her, the image of “Kasoa boys” being associated with smoking is exaggerated, insisting that many of them rather spend time socialising and drinking ataya, a popular local tea.

“Kasoa boys don’t smoke, they only take ataya. I love ataya myself,” she said during the discussion, drawing mixed reactions online.

Her comment was made while discussing efforts to improve the image and development of Kasoa under what she described as a “Kasoa Reset Agenda.”

The remarks have since gone viral, with some social media users praising the MP for defending the youth of the area, while others debated the accuracy of her claim.

Kasoa, located in the Awutu Senya East Municipality in the Central Region of Ghana, has often been in the national spotlight over crime-related issues. However, the MP insists the majority of young people in the area are hardworking and should not be unfairly stereotyped.
