GPRTU Technical Team Meets to Assess Possible Increase in Transport Fares

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) is holding an emergency meeting today to assess the possibility of an increase in transport fares across the country. The technical team of the union is expected to deliberate on the rising cost of operations in the transport sector, particularly the increasing prices of fuel, spare parts, and maintenance costs, which have put significant strain on transport operators.

The meeting comes on the heels of rising inflation and global fuel price fluctuations, which have led to a surge in the cost of living for Ghanaians. Transport fares, which were last adjusted some months ago, may see another hike to help operators cope with the mounting pressures.

According to industry experts, transport fares are a critical factor in Ghana’s economy as they directly impact the cost of goods and services across the country. Any increase could, however, add to the financial burden on commuters, particularly those in the informal sector who rely heavily on public transport.

The GPRTU is expected to present its case to the government in the coming days if they decide that fare increases are necessary. The union has previously petitioned for government assistance to address the rising costs in the sector, particularly during challenging economic times.

The outcome of today’s meeting will likely have significant implications for commuters and the broader Ghanaian economy. Transport unions and the public will be watching closely to see if the proposed fare hikes will go through or if alternative measures will be explored.
