The 24-Hour Economy: Ghana’s Bold Step Toward Economic Transformation
Ghana is set to witness one of its most ambitious economic reforms in recent history with the introduction of the 24-hour economy, announced by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Describing the initiative as a game-changer for the nation, President Mahama emphasized that the 24-hour economy aims to unlock new opportunities for businesses, create jobs, and boost productivity across sectors. “The 24-hour economy stands as the most ambitious economic transformation effort in Ghana’s recent history,” he stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to modernizing the business landscape.

Under the plan, key urban centers will see extended operational hours for critical industries, including retail, logistics, entertainment, and transport, allowing businesses to operate beyond traditional schedules. The government also intends to strengthen regulatory frameworks, ensure adequate security, and improve public infrastructure to support round-the-clock activities.

Economic analysts have welcomed the announcement, noting that such a policy could attract foreign investment, enhance tourism, and stimulate local entrepreneurship. However, experts caution that the success of the 24-hour economy will depend on careful planning, public-private collaboration, and the provision of incentives to businesses willing to participate.

The initiative forms part of a broader vision by President Mahama’s administration to position Ghana as a competitive, resilient, and inclusive economy capable of meeting the aspirations of its growing population.
For many Ghanaians, the announcement signals a promising future where economic activities are no longer confined to daylight hours, opening doors for innovation, employment, and continuous growth – a clear indication that Ghana is stepping boldly into a new era of economic transformation.
President John Dramani Mahama remains optimistic that the 24-hour economy will become a cornerstone of the country’s development agenda.
