In the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, President Mahama announced the government’s decision to reintroduce road tolls across key highways in Ghana.
The President explained that the tolls would be used to fund the maintenance and expansion of the country’s road infrastructure, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for commuters and transporters alike.
“Road tolls are necessary to sustain our road network and to support ongoing and upcoming infrastructure projects that will benefit all Ghanaians,” President Mahama stated.

The announcement comes as part of the government’s broader agenda to modernize the nation’s transport system, including the development of new expressways and the rehabilitation of existing roads.
While the reintroduction of tolls is expected to generate additional revenue for road projects, it may also draw public scrutiny regarding affordability and implementation. Officials have assured that measures will be taken to ensure transparency and fairness in the tolling system.
