Fire Safety Week: Seek Fire Service advice when designing Building plans – GNFS cautions

Ghanaians have been advised to consult the fire service when designing building plans for their homes.

During a sensitization program on GIFTs FM, as part of the Fire Safety Week celebration, ASO Sabutu Suraj Deen, Safety Officer at the Dormaa Central Fire Command, underscored the necessity of incorporating three exits for kitchens in new buildings to enhance safety during emergency fire situations.

He stressed that the aesthetic appeal of a building plan does not equate to safety, and therefore, it is crucial to seek guidance from the fire safety department when drafting building plans to ensure the necessary guidelines are followed, thereby preventing entrapment during emergency fire incidents.

ADO 1 Rita Alleonu In Charge of Education at the Dormaa Central Municipal fire command revealed several challenges confronting the command, urging immediate assistance from the general public to facilitate their operations effectively.

She highlighted that the fire thunder is in dire need of urgent attention, noting that fuel allocation is problematic due to insufficient government support for their fuel.

Furthermore, she mentioned the limited number of fire hydrants, which hampers their access to water, and the poor building layouts that obstruct their movement during fire outbreaks in certain areas. According to her, these issues require immediate attention to enable them to meet the expectations of the people of Dormaa Ahenkro and its surrounding communities.
