Barcelona Sporting Director Deco has explained why the club chose not to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams during the recent transfer window, despite the Spain international being a highly sought-after forward.

Williams, who boasts Ghanaian heritage, was a top target for both Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona following his standout performances for club and country last season.

The 22-year-old made 31 appearances in La Liga, netting 5 goals and providing 11 assists, while also playing a crucial role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.

Deco clarified that Barcelona decided against pursuing Williams because of their existing depth in attacking positions.

“We didn’t sign Nico Williams as we already have Raphinha, Ferran, Ansu, Lamine, plus Fermin and Olmo who can contribute in those roles,” Deco explained.

The sporting director highlighted Dani Olmo’s versatility as a key reason why the club didn’t feel the need to sign another winger. “Dani Olmo offers us multiple options, so there was no need for an additional winger,” he added.

Despite Barcelona’s interest, Williams remained with Athletic Bilbao, where he is under contract until 2027. His buyout clause, reportedly around €63 million (£53 million), may have also influenced Barcelona’s decision to look elsewhere.
