In a significant turn of events in the legal proceedings against Nana Appiah Mensah, the CEO of the now-defunct Menzgold, the state attorney has decided to withdraw all previous charges. Instead, new charges have been introduced in court on November 17, 2023.
Amendments to Figures Prompt Filing of New Charges
Yvonne Atakora, the Director of Prosecution, clarified that adjustments to certain financial figures in the case necessitated the filing of fresh charges. She emphasized that this decision was made to ensure the pursuit of justice.
Adjournment Granted for Review of New Charges
The court has adjourned the case to December 4, 2023, providing NAM1’s legal team with sufficient time to review the newly filed charges. This adjournment was requested by the defense and accepted by the state attorney.
Heightened Security Measures Following Assault Incident
Responding to a reported assault on NAM1’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) after a previous court hearing, the presiding judge has instructed enhanced security measures at the court entrance. Security personnel have been deployed both inside and outside the courtroom.
Background: Menzgold Customers Demand Fund Release
Customers of Menzgold, seeking the release of their funds since the company’s suspension of operations in 2018, continue to voice their grievances. Menzgold is accused of operating a Ponzi scheme, and Nana Appiah Mensah is currently facing trial for fraud.
Discrepancy in Police Deposit Claims
Contradicting NAM1’s assertion that he deposited GH¢5 million with the Ghana Police Service for distribution to Menzgold customers, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, clarified in Parliament that only GH¢2.5 million was received. The Ghana Police Service subsequently deposited this amount with the Bank of Ghana.
