According to reports, former Chelsea star Marcos Alonso is in talks to join Atletico Madrid from Barcelona.

The 32-year-old Spanish defender spent six years at Stamford Bridge before relocating to the Nou Camp one year ago.

Former Chelsea player Marcos Alonso may sign a free transfer to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona.

With 37 games, he made an impression last season as Barcelona won La Liga for the first time since 2019.

However, according to Football Transfers, Alonso is already planning for the summer of 2022, when his contract expires.

Low on funds Barca is not likely to extend their contract to the left-back.

Furthermore, Alonso is reportedly in negotiations for a free transfer to Atletico Madrid in 2024.

Alonso would be reunited with former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta and former Blues striker Alvaro Morata upon moving to the Wanda Metropolitano.

Alonso fits right into Diego Simeone’s five-man defense, and the star can also play center back.

Furthermore, Alonso would become the most recent player to play for both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, with Antoine Griezmann being the most recent following his frequent transfers.

Since Alonso began his professional career at Real Madrid, he would also hold the distinction of representing all three of Spain’s elite teams.

Before traveling to England with Bolton, he made just one appearance for Los Blancos during the 2009–10 campaign.

For Alonso, spells at Sunderland and Fiorentina came next.

But when Chelsea signed him for £24 million in 2016, that was when he finally got his big break.

Alonso made an instant impression by taking center stage in Antonio Conte’s first-ever Premier League title victory.

He went on to score 29 goals in 212 appearances and won an FA Cup, Europa League, and Champions League in London.

Since then, Alonso has scored three goals in forty-four games for Barcelona on a free transfer.

And he still has a chance to influence the title race this season, having made seven appearances so far this term.
